There are a few important things you should know about becoming a travel agent. You probably are doing your research or just plain curious. Can people really make money booking travel? Do people still use travel agents? How can you start without having to spend thousands of dollars? Do I need to go to "travel agent school"? These are valid questions.

"If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life". Turn your passion for travel into income.

You can create the life that you are proud of.
You can create the life that you are proud of.

Yes, you can earn substantial income as a travel agent if you are serious. If you treat this like a business it will pay you like one. Imagine earning over $1,000 in commissions booking one French balcony cabin for two adults on an eight day river cruise on the Danube. There's many secrets to the travel industry!

Over 50% of people prefer to use a travel advisor. They can plan anything travel related from beginning to end and act as an advocate to give clients a stress free and seamless experience. Travel agents have insider access, payment plans, travel agent exclusive pricing, save clients money, offer concierge services, and so much more.

Hopefully, you will see that it is quite simple to get started. You start to build a successful home-based independent travel agent business as soon as you are ready.

Becoming a travel agent in the United States is super easy and has little to no risk or investment to you. Lucky for you, travel is an amazing industry, the largest in the world, and is readily available for you no matter which state you reside! It's even available in other countries, like Mexico, Brazil, Jamaica, Germany, England, Australia, to name a few, depending on the host agency.

The best way to break into the industry is by partnering up with reputable Host Travel Agency that already has experience in travel. Everything you need to become a legit travel agent is a partnership away. Look for longevity and experience, preferably a Premier Host Agency with A+ rating with BBB.

Here are a few things you'll be excited to know:

  1. TRAVEL AGENT SCHOOL IS NOT REQUIRED: Those online courses or travel agent schools are not needed in order for you to be in travel. Everything you need to learn about being a travel agent will be provided by the agency's trainings and supplier specific trainings. You learn "on the job".

  2. FORMAL DEGREE IS NOT NECESSARY: Most host agencies require you to be 18+ years and older, residing in the country that they are operational in, a small entry fee and monthly membership fee to receive access to their credentials, accreditations, support, and trainings.

  3. YOU ARE A BUSINESS OWNER: By becoming an independent travel advisor through a host agency, you are a home-based independent contractor and is considered a business owner. You are responsible for how much you want to earn based on the type of travel you book and the type of clientele you are servicing. You are in charge of marketing your business to your friends, family, local community, social media platforms, and at networking events.

  4. YOU NEED A HOST AGENCY: You will be able to enter into the travel industry through the "business in a box" or "turn key business" model. The host agency provides you with the websites, tools, trainings, relationships to suppliers, and support, so you can book travel and get paid the built-in commissions from their preferred partners.

  5. EARN COMMISSIONS FROM BOOKING TRAVEL: You will earn anywhere from 40 % up to 90% of the built-in commissions determined by the suppliers based on their relationships with the host agency. The average high is 70-80% starting out. Travel agents book hotels, resorts, condos, villas, vacation rentals, car rentals, sports, concerts, rails, transfers, flights, trip protection, cruises, Disney, Universal Studios, and so much more.

  6. THERE ARE FEES TO START: There are a few that cost $0 to start or has no monthly fee, but watch out. Usually free means extremely low commission split with the agent earning little for doing all the work. Typically the monthly is $40-80, with a one time set up fee of $100-$500, and possible annual fee of $100-500. (You can also purchase a travel franchise, but those are more costly with an investment of $5k- $10k to start plus franchise fees.)

  7. WORK FROM HOME/ REMOTE WORK: All you need is a laptop and phone with working wi-fi. You can do it all online and from anywhere there is access to the internet. You set your own hours. Most start out working this part-time.

  8. LEARN AS YOU EARN: Most successful travel agents are avid learners. They take webinars, travel agent basics, take trainings, attend supplier events and industry events continually. The more you learn the more you earn. You can choose to specialize in the niche that fits your goals as an agent.

  9. YOU NEED TO BE A RESIDENT IN THE U.S.: In order to start, you need to have a tax ID such as your social security number or EIN and a US address.

  10. GET STARTED: Once you find the right host agency, just get started. Take your trainings, create a brand and business name, pick a niche, and start booking!
